Transition words

This structured list of commonly used English transition words — approximately 200, can be considered as quasi complete. It can be used (by students and teachers alike) to find the right expression. English transition words are essential, since they not only connect ideas, but also can introduce a certain shift, contrast or opposition, emphasis or agreement, purpose, result or conclusion, etc. in the line of argument.
The transition words and phrases have been assigned only once to somewhat artificial categories, although some words belong to more than one category.
There is some overlapping with preposition and postposition, but for the purpose of clarity and completeness of this concise guide, I did not differentiate.

Usage of Transition Words in Essays
Transition words and phrases are vital devices for essays, papers or other literary compositions. They improve the connections and transitions between sentences and paragraphs. They thus give the text a logical organization and structure (see also: a List of Synonyms).
All English transition words and phrases (sometimes also called 'conjunctive adverbs') do the same work as coordinating conjunctions: they connect two words, phrases or clauses together and thus the text is easier to read and the coherence is improved.
Usage: transition words are used with a special rule for punctuation: a semicolon or a period is used after the first 'sentence', and a comma is almost always used to set off the transition word from the second 'sentence'.
Example 1:
People use 43 muscles when they frown; however, they use only 28 muscles when they smile.

Example 2:
However, transition words can also be placed at the beginning of a new paragraph or sentence - not only to indicate a step forward in the reasoning, but also to relate the new material to the preceding thoughts.
Use a semicolon to connect sentences, only if the group of words on either side of the semicolon is a complete sentence each (both must have a subject and a verb, and could thus stand alone as a complete thought).

Wesak Festival

Wesak festival  also known as Buddha Purnima and Buddha Day, is a holiday observed traditionally byBuddhists on different days in IndiaSri LankaNepalTibetBangladeshBhutanIndonesiaPhilippinesSingaporeVietnam,ThailandCambodiaLaosMalaysia and Myanmar and in other places all over the world. Sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday", it actually commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvāna), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada or southern tradition.

Deepavali

Diwali (or Deepavali, the "festival of lights") is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) every year. Arguably the most important festival in Hinduism, it is an official holiday in FijiGuyana, India, Pakistan, MalaysiaMauritiusMyanmarNepalSingaporeSri LankaSuriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness or good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Its celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings in the communities and countries where it is observed. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November.
Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja (prayers) typically toLakshmi – the goddess of fertility and prosperity. After puja, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Deepavali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated.
The name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly among Hindus, based on the region of India. In many parts of India, the festivities start with Dhanteras (in Northern and Western part of India), followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wife–husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhau-beejdedicated to sister–brother bond on the fifth day. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra.
On the same night that Hindus celebrate Diwali, Jains celebrate a festival of lights to mark the attainment of moksha byMahaviraSikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas and some Newar Buddhists also celebrate Diwali remembering Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism.

Dragon boat festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also often known as the  Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near the summer solstice. It is also known as Zhongxiao Festival ( 忠孝節), commemorating fealty and filial piety. The festival now occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festival's alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival.[5] The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the date of the festival varies from year to year on the Gregorian. In 2014, it fell on June 2; in 2015, on June 20; and in 2016, it occurred on June 9.

There is a story to the Dragon boat festival. The story best known in modern China holds that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States Period of the Zhou Dynasty.  A cadet member of the Chu Royal House, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance and even accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty-eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River.
It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him or at least retrieve his body. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice or as known as zhong zi  into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body.

The lantern festival

The Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar  Chinese calendar.  It marks the final day of the traditional Chinese new year  celebrations, and usually falls on some day in February or March in the Gregorian  calendar. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lantern and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜灯谜). ]

In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones. In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones, which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune.

Toy Story 3

The little boy from toy story 1 and 2 has grow up. Andy is now 17 and ready to head off to college, leaving Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the toy-box gang to ponder their uncertain futures. When the toys are accidentally donated to the Sunnyside Daycare center they're initially overjoyed to once again be played with, but their enthusiasm quickly gives way to horror as they discover the true nature of the establishment under the rule of the deceptively welcoming "Lotso" Bear. Now, all of the toys must band together in one final, crazy scheme to escape their confines and return home to Andy.

Toy Story 2

I forgot something about toys a long time ago, and "Toy Story 2'' reminded me. It involves the love, pity and guilt that a child feels for a favorite toy. A doll or an action figure (or a Pokemon) is yours in the same way a pet is. It depends on you. It misses you. It can't do anything by itself. It needs you and is troubled when you're not there.

This is a movie about what you hope your toys do when you're not around--and what you fear. They have lives of their own, but you are the sun in the sky of their universe, and when you treat them badly, their feelings are wounded.
The story begins with Andy, the little boy who owns the Toy Story toys, going off to camp. Woody, the cowboy, is in bad shape with a torn arm, and gets left behind. This is crushing to Woody, but worse is to come, when he gets scooped up at a garage sale by Big Al the toy collector, repaired, mended and repainted--and scheduled for sale to a toy museum in Japan.
At first this adventure is kind of fun for Woody, who finds out for the first time that he is part of a set of toys, the Roundup Gang, that also includes a cowgirl named Jessie, a horse named Bullseye and a prospector named Stinky Pete. Woody is blown away to discover he even starred in a black-and-white TV puppet show in the '50s, and begins to think that since Andy might eventually abandon him, he might enjoy retiring as the star attraction in a toy museum.
Meanwhile, Buzz Lightyear and the other toys discover what has happened and lead a dangerous crosstown mission to rescue Woody. And we begin to get insights into the private lives of toys. Stinky Pete, for example, is bitter because no kid ever bought him, and he's still in his original box. Jessie is spunky and liberated, but this cowgirl does get the blues; she sings the winsome "When She Loved Me'' about her former owner Emily, who tossed her under the bed and forgot her. "You never forget kids, but they forget you,'' Buzz sighs, but he argues for the position that it is better to be loved for the length of a childhood than admired forever behind glass in a museum.

Toy Story

I am going to share a  movie that I believe almost everyone in this world had watched, it is called Toy Story.

A little boy named Andy loves to be in his room, playing with his toys, especially his doll named "Woody". But, what do the toys do when Andy is not with them, they come to life. Woody believes that he has life (as a toy) good. However, he must worry about Andy's family moving, and what Woody does not know is about Andy's birthday party. Woody does not realize that Andy's mother gave him an action figure known as Buzz Lightyear, who does not believe that he is a toy, and quickly becomes Andy's new favorite toy. Woody, who is now consumed with jealousy, tries to get rid of Buzz. Then, both Woody and Buzz are now lost. They must find a way to get back to Andy before he moves without them, but they will have to pass through a ruthless toy killer, Sid Phillips.

Colours(Narrative)

The story of a rainbow

It is a stormy night, I was in my bed hope that i can fall asleep and prepare to repeat the day again tomorrow. Every stormy night hook up my sweet childhood memories where my mother will comfort me every time I got scared when there is a storm at night. Mother will read  my favorite story book to console me to sleep . The story goes like this.

Once upon a time all the in the world started to quarrel, each claimed that they were the best, the most important, the most useful, or the most favorite colour. Green said, " Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and hope. I was chosen for the grass, the trees and the leaves. Without me all the animals  would die. Look out into the countryside and you will see that I am in the majorities. "

Blue interrupted, You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and this is drawn up by the clouds from the blues sea. The sky gives space and serenity. Without my peace you would all be nothing but busybodies."

Yellow chuckled: "You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety and warmth into the world . The sun is yellow , the moon is yellow , the stars is yellow. Every time you look at the sunflower the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange next started to blow its own trumpet. "I am the colour of health and strength .I may be scars but I am precious because I serve the inner needs of human life. I carry all the important vitamins .Think of the carrots, the pumpkins and the oranges. I do not hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise, or give you a majestic sunset to admire, my beauty is so striking that no one ever gives  another thought to any of you!"

Red could stand it no longer . Red shouted out," I am the ruler of you all. Blood, life's blood. I am the colour of danger and bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire in the blood. Without  me the earth would be as empty as the moon .I am the colour of passion and of love, the red rose , the poinsettia and the poppy."

Purple rose up to its full height. He was very tall and spoke with great pomp:" I am the colour of royalty and power. Kings ,chiefs and bishops have chosen me, for I am the sign of authorities and of wisdom. People do not question me. They listen and obey."

Indigo spoke with a soft voice, but just as determinedly." Think of me, I am the colour of silence. You hardly notice me but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep waters. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace.

All the colour went on boasting, each convinced that they were the best. Their quarrelling grew louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash and brilliant white lightning, thunder rolled and boomed out. The suddenly rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colour all crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

The rain spoke:" You foolish colours, fighting among yourself , each try to dominate the others. Did you not know that the creator made you all, each for a special purpose, unique and different. The creator loves you all, he wants you all. Join hands with one another and come with me. He will stretch you across the sky in a great bow of colour as a reminder that he loves you all, that you can live together in peace, a promise that he is with you, a sign of hope for all for tomorow."

SO whenever "He" uses a good rain to wash the world "He" puts the rainbow in the sky, and when we should remember that "He" wants us all to appreciate , and live with each other in peace and not try to fight and dominate everyone. After she puts me to sleep, she covers me with my comforter. The next day, after the storm is over, there will be a beautiful rainbow in the morning sky.

Colours( Factual )

Colours of nature

The world of nature is colourful and bright and human ingenuity cannot hope to match it. Right from the sky above to the sea below, nature abounds in the richness of colour. The human eye and the human mind respond to this world of colour and identify themselves with it. When a person is cheerful and bright we refer to him as a 'colourful personality', similarly the different colours are used to indicate human moods and attitudes: blue is associated with depression, white is likened with serenity, green with jealousy and red with rage. Colour is also used to relieve tension. Psychologists have investigated the effect of colour on the working ability of workers and have come to the conclusion that certain colours are more conducive to Positive thinking than others.

Nature fulfils man's longing for colour: there is variety in everything. The sky can be clear and blue, it can be dark with clouds, it reflects the glory of the rising sun and the variegated hues of the setting sun. The sea which is normally associated with blue is not really so all the time. The sea water can he blue, green, grey and many more subtle shades and even the rivers and streams reflect the surrounding area and acquire that colour. Coleridge's poem 'The Ancient Mariner' is rich in its description of the world of nature. People who do not observe are not able to notice the finer shades and are consequently not able to enjoy this valuable side of life.

In the west, seasonal changes bring in changes in the landscape. While spring is rich with colour, autumn provides a restful view to the eye with its soft browns and ripe greens and winter brings in the whiteness of snow along with its stillness conveying the effect of sleepiness and hibernation. And if on the one hand there is joy and vivacity in spring, there is coolness in the abundance of the green forests, and a challenge in the dark rocks of the mountains and an immensity in the vast, barren stretches of sand.

On the question of birds, I have discovered that in their world there are endless colour combinations. If green and grey birds mate, the new born chick has a lovely soft green color; if yellow and blue mate the chicks may be either a heightened blue or a softened yellow. No painter's effort can successfully capture the elusive world of nature.

Nature's world of colour, especially among the animals, has a deeper purpose than there variety. The colour of animals helps them to successfully camouflage themselves. If the toad is brown and mingles with the colour of the earth, the frog merges with the green colour of the scum. The polar bear is white but not so the tropical bear. Fishes also have the ability to change colour in order to mingle with their surroundings as do some birds like the willow ptarmigan. Lizards also have different colours according to their surroundings - a desert lizard will be sand-coloured while a lizard in a heavy monsoon area will be of greenish hue. Butterflies and insects also share this characteristic. This is not to say that animals and birds do not have bright colours which contrast with their surroundings. This also has a purpose. The bright colours of the peacock are not only a pleasure to the human eye but they also push the peahen into obscurity and offer her greater protection. A male bird may display some brilliant coloration to scare a rival. The Chinese ring-necked pheasant does exactly this, he puffs out his red pouches on the side of his neck when confronted by another male.

Thus colour does not only give pleasure, it also has a purpose. Imagine life without the colour of nature! It would indeed be dull and monotonous the sparkle of life will not he there. Colour also has brought up problems. The whole problem of racial discrimination is connected with the colour of the human skin. Men are hidebound in their narrow beliefs and have not yet learnt to value the variety of colour and have not understood nature's purpose behind this.

A drama I watched

I finished watching a Chinese drama named The Legend of Miyue ( 芈月传 . It is a nice drama about the history of china during the warring states. In the Warring States period, Mi Yue  is King Wei of Chu’s favorite little princess, but after her father’s death, her life falls to chaos. Her mother is cast out of the palace by the Queen of Chu, and Mi Yue and her brother Mi Rong hide in the palace, avoiding disaster after disaster. Mi Yue had had a childhood sweetheart, but is instead sent as an attendant to the state of Qin when her sister, Mi Shu, marries there. Mi Shu becomes the queen of Qin, while Mi Yue becomes a consort. After Mi Yue gives birth to her son , her relationship with Mi Shu deteriorates . Later, Mi Yue and Mi Shu are sent to the far away state of Yan, but unexpectedly, Mi Shu’s son dies, and Qin enters internal turmoil. Mi Yue’s son becomes the next king of Qin, and Mi Yue becomes the first empress dowager in history, “The Empress Dowager Xuan.”

Hari Raya AidilFitri

The Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, called Hari Raya Aidilfitri, is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims.Hari Raya literally means ‘celebration day’, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the day that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of dawn-to-sunset fasting. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is considered one of the two most important celebrations for Muslims, the other being Hari Raya Haji – the festival of Abraham’s sacrifice.
Hari Raya is one of the biggest holidays in Malaysia, and many Muslims (and even non-Muslims) return to their family home (balik kampong) driving or flying home for a couple of days before the day to be with their families and loved ones. There are often jams during this travelling time but these soon resolve as other travellers reach their destinations.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri sees families and friends seeking forgiveness from each other, visiting ancestors’ graves, saying prayers at the mosque and visiting relatives and friends to feast traditional Malay delicacies like ketupat, rendang, satay, lemang and curry. In Malaysia, children are given token sums of money from their parents or elders.
I here wish all Muslim around the world selamat Hari Raya AidilFitri.

Last friday ( 24/06/2016) , my classmate and I carry on an experiment in the biology lab during the first period in the morning. Everyone was very excited when we enter the biology lab , and ready to proceed the experiment. Our biology teacher ask us to prepare all the apparatus and the materials, but one of my classmate accidentally broke a boiling tube . After everyone had settle down, the teacher brief us about the experiment. We are going to carry out an experiment about to determine the energy in the food sample, we compare the energy in a peanut and a cashew nut. Although this is an individual experiment , my group and I still share the same fire to burn food sample.  We finished setting up the apparatus and then we only start the experiment. First we  spike the peanut firmly at the end of a pin which is mounted on some plasticine. Then we ignite the peanut by holding it in the flame of a bunsen burner , then immediately place it beneath the boiling tube to heat the water inside the boiling tube. we repeat the step again but using a cashew nut. The result is amazing, the peanut is able to heat the water until it reaches 55*C ,but the cashew nut is even unbelievable it can heat the water until its boiling point which is 100*C. It was a fun experiment , we are all excited for the next experiment.

COLOURS

We all live in a world where at some point, colour will be a part of, and effect us in our every day lives. Colour in everyday life is very diverse, from knowing that a fruit is ripe to eat, to understanding how Colour can affect our moods. Many peoples said that red represent anger, blue or grey represent sadness, green is disgust, yellow is joy and many more colour can represent our emotions. Even a the famous Disney make a movie based on our emotions. Scientist also found out that colours of the room where u sleeps in can effect ur heart rate. When sleeping in a room where the walls is painted blue, we can sleep more peacefully and it feels more cool in a blue room.Whereas being in a room where the walls is painted red, our heart rate is faster. Room painted with light and bright colours often will feel more wider and bigger compare to a room which are paintes in dark and dull colour. Our life is full of colour , i can't imagine a life without colours , without colours the world would be in a chaos. A place without colour is boring ,dead and unattractive, we couldn't know when is a fruit ripe to eat.

Abandoned house on the hill

During holiday, my friend and i decided to do something. We decided to hike the hill near our house to go insects hunting. We packed all our gadget and advance to the hill. We wandered around the trees and bushes, and we caught many different kind of insects found in this hill. As we roam around , we reached the top of the hill. There is a house on top of the hill, it is old and worn and covered with spider webs. According to my grandparents ,this abandoned house is already here when they just move into this place, it has been empty for a long time. We got curious and wanted to explore the abandoned house but we are afraid .We gathered our courage and march up the stairs to the front door. We knocked the door ,there was no one inside and the door is not locked. We tiptoe into the house, there is a lot of picture hanging at the walls . All the people in the pictures has no face and they are all facing to the kitchen. We slowly stride to the kitchen , at the same time we feels like there is someone following us at the back, but there is no one behind us. As we getting near the kitchen ,we heard a loud noise and a shadow appears in the kitchen. We quickly ran out the house and down the hill. It is a scary adventure and the abandoned house and the shadow will continue to remain a mystery to us.

Save the Earth

Earth day is celebrated on April 22 ,on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The Earth is like a second mother to us, if there's no earth ,there's no us. So we must do our best to protect it. We know that the earth is facing a serious problem cause by us human which is pollution and destruction. There is many way for us to prevent and preserve the sanctity of the earth against pollution and destruction.

1. Pay attention to how you use water. The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth, you are doing something good.
2. Walk or ride your bike to school, work and anywhere you can if it is not far from ur house. You can reduce greenhouse gases while burning some calories and imporving your health. If you can't walk or bike, use public transport or carpool. Every car not on the road makes a different.
3. Recycle , Reuse and Reduce waste materials from your house.
4. Turn off lights when you are not in the room and unplug appliances when you are not usint them. It only takes a second to be environmentally conscious.
5. Compost. Think about how much trash you make in a year. Reducing the amount of solid waste you produce in a year means taking up less space in landfills, so your tax dollars can work somewhere else. Plus, compost makes a great natural fertilizer.

Going green is easier than you think. There are little things you can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment. Taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility -- it's a privilege. So, GO GREEN!!!
.Save the World in 10 minutes...

SHORT SCARY STORIES

1. I heard one, a father is laying in bed after just waking up, he grabs the baby monitor and walks to his desk in his office at home, he has his baby on the baby monitor and hears his wife singing to her, he cracks a smile as he hears his wife “Go to sleep… go to sleep…” When suddenly the front door opens up and his wife comes in with groceries.

2.Mommy told me never to go in the basement, but I wanted to see what was making that noise. It kind of sounded like a puppy, and I wanted to see the puppy, so I opened the basement door and tiptoed down a bit. I didn’t see a puppy, and then Mommy yanked me out of the basement and yelled at me. Mommy had never yelled at me before, and it made me sad and I cried. Then Mommy told me never to go into the basement again, and she gave me a cookie. That made me feel better, so I didn’t ask her why the boy in the basement was making noises like a puppy, or why he had no hands or feet.

3.After working a hard day I came home to see my girlfriend cradling our child. I didn’t know which was more frightening, seeing my dead girlfriend and stillborn child, or knowing that someone broke into my apartment to place them there.

4.The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:07 before she pushed her long rotting nails through my chest, her other hand muffling my screams.

5.You hear your mom calling you into the kitchen. As you are heading down the stairs you hear a whisper from the closet saying “Don’t go down there honey, I heard it too.”
I sat bolt upright, relieved it was only a dream, but as I saw my alarm clock read 12:06, I heard my closet door creak open.

6.I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy check for monsters under my bed.” I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, “Daddy there’s somebody on my bed.”

7.My daughter won’t stop crying and screaming in the middle of the night. I visit her grave and ask her to stop, but it doesn’t help.

8. 'Hey ...... its monday.....'

                                          Valentine's Day Poem

                                                                                     by Tze Hao
 Flowers bloom as colours paint
                                                         Red and Green
                                                         Blue and yellow
Did you know a legendary flower
                                                         that glows in the dark,
                                                         no matter what?

Under the sun, you might not be
                                                         the prettiest
But in the dark, you've shown me
                                                         your brightest.
Unbeknown to me, oh how i fell
                                                         in awe of your beauty.

                                                         Flowers bloom as colour paint
                                                         Red and green
                                                         Blue and yellow
Among the gardens you went unoticed
                                                         Yet under the night sky,
                                                         you glow the brightest.

                                                         Oh, how fragile, how beautiful

During that night I met you,
I pledge to you, my leige
I shall protect you with my might
And guard you with my sight.

                                                         No matter what it takes,
                                                         I won't let anyone
                                                         Destroy your hopes
                                                         and dreams.
