Caring for our teeth

A very good morning to the Headmaster, teachers and fellow students. I am here to talk about how we should care for our teeth. Our teeth are very important to us. We need our teeth to bite and chew our food. Our teeth also give our face its shape. Therefore, we have to take care of them.

We must brush our teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before we go to bed. We must brush them properly to remove food particles that are stuck between the teeth. If we do not remove these particles, bacteria will attack our teeth. That is how tooth decay and cavities occur.

Using a proper toothbrush is important. Use a soft or medium bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth in an up-and-down motion. When you brush your teeth, massage your gums to keep them healthy. Weak and unhealthy gums cannot hold your teeth well. Soon, your teeth will become loose and fall off.

It is important to follow a proper diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These are good for strong bones and teeth. Fibrous fruits help to clean teeth and remove food particles stuck between teeth by increasing the flow of saliva in your mouth. Chewing is also a good form of exercise.

You must learn to avoid eating too many sweets and chocolates. If you do not eat them, brush your teeth after eating. Do not bite hard nuts, ice or bones because you may break or crack your teeth.

Finally, remember to visit your dentist once every six months, even if you do not have a toothache.

 Thank you.
