A very good morning to the Headmaster, teachers and my fellow students. This week is Road Safety Week and today I'm going to talk about road safety for cyclist. Many road accidents happen as a result of carelessness on the part of drivers and on the part of cyclist themselves. I would like to remind you about some safety precautions which could save your life.
Firstly, all cyclist should wear helmets. In an accident, a head injury can be very severe. Many deaths have occurred because the head was not well protected.
Also always make sure you cycle with both hands on the handle bar. This is to be sure you are always in control of the bicycle.Sometimes, boys like to show off and cycle with their hands stretched out in the air. This is certainly very dangerous because you can very easily lose control of your bicycle and crash.
Be sure to stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway,or when coming out of a road junction,an alley or a curb.Always look to your left ,then to your right and to your left again to make sure there is no oncoming traffic. Don,t ride too close to parked vehicles as the door of a car may sudddenly open and you may crash into it.
When cycling along the road, always cycle in the same direction as the vehicles, never against the traffic. If there are special lanes for cyclist, use them as it is safer.Never cycle two abreast on the main roads. It is best to cycle in single file on busy roads.
Always observe all traffic rules as this may save your life. Remember that a cyclist is more at risk than a larger vehicle. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Thank you.
