Malaysia is made u of different races and we celebrate a variety of festivals. The most important festival for the Chinese is Chinese New Year, which usually falls in January or February. The Chinese make it a point to settle all debts before the new year begins. on the eve of the new year, families get together for a special reunion dinner. Younger unmarried members of the family receive red packets containing money when they visit older relatives and friends.
The Muslim celebrate Hari Raya Puasa which marks the end of the fasting month. The festivals begins with prayers at the mosque early in the morning. Some people visit the cemetery to pray for loved one who have departed. After that, there are visits to relatives' houses and feasts. The most popular dish during this time is the ketupat, which is made from rice, and chicken or beef rendang, a curry dish that is cooked with coconut milk.
Deepavali or the festival of Lights is celebrated by the Hindus. Hindu homes are decorated with little lamps which symbolise the victory of good over evil. On this special day, Hindus dress in new clothes and go to the temple in the morning. Then they visit their friends or invite friends over to their homes for a feast.
