Controlling dengue

A very good morning to the Headmaster, teachers and students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Damansara Jaya. The number of dengue cases has increased in the last couple of months. Today I am here to talk about how to control the spread of dengue.

Dengue is a very dangerous disease. Many people die of this disease. It is spread by the Aedes mosquitoes. The only way to control the spread of this disease is to destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. To do this the public has to get involved.

Mosquitoes breed mostly in stagnant water commonly found around the house and garden. Look out for containers like flowerpot plates, bottle, cans, tins and old tyres which may hold stagnant water. It is important to wash and scrub flowerpot plates and vases. Make sure too, that rubbish is disposed of properly. Do not leave any containers around which can collect water. Clogged drains have to be cleared and cleaned so that water flows freely. Use a larvicide like Abate in containers such as the water tank where water is stored.

It is also extremely important to educate the public on the dangers of the Aedes mosquitoes and the spread of dengue. The public must understand the importance of health and preventive measures to avoid the spread of disease. This can be done by having more TV and radio commercials to spread this information. The local newspapers and councils can play by having warnings and reminders in the newspaper as well as on posters in schools and community areas.

It takes only one week for the Aedes mosquitoes to breed so search for and destroy the breeding places now.

  Thank you.
